28 Of Outsides 100 Best Places To Work Are In Colorado

Colorado companies once again dominate Outside magazine's annual list of the Best Places to Work — especially those with some sort of love for adventure sports or connection to the outdoor sports industry.
Outside Thursday named 28 companies based in the Centennial State to its 2014 list of the 100 best places to work, with four in the top 10 and half of the spots in the top 20.
Boulder-based Sphero, a robotic toy manufacturer, was the Colorado company that nabbed the highest spot on Outside's ranking, coming in at No. 3.
Plenty of other Boulder companies joined Sphero, with 13 others based in Boulder landing spots on the list.
Outside's list ranks 100 companies nationwide based on employee surveys and data from Outdoor Sports Industry Association and Best Companies Group, Outside. The Santa Fe-based magazine picks companies that encourage healthy and active lifestyles, are environmentally-friendly and give back to the community.“These companies set the standard for workplaces that really value their employees and offer an experience that’s fulfilling inside and outside the office," said Outside executive editor Michael Roberts.
Last year, Colorado companies occupied 27 out of the 100 spots, including the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Denver-based marketing firm GroundFloor Media was No. 1, and Highlands Ranch-based software designer Zen Planner was No. 2. This year, GroundFloor was ranked in the No. 4 spot, which founder Laura Love said is because enjoying everyday life is so important to the company culture."Our professional creativity and energy is best fueled when our personal lives are fulfilled," Love said. "That means making sure there is quality time to spend with family and friends, to enjoy the outdoors and contribute to our communities." Jeff Gardner, CEO of Zen Planner — a Highlands Ranch-based fitness software designing firm — said his company's focus on creating a good life balance for employees is why it came in the top 10 for the second year in a row — at No. 6. "We’ve been very deliberate in creating an environment that provides work and life balance because happy employees are the cornerstone of Zen Planner’s continued success," Gardner said. Fort Collins-based beer maker New Belgium Brewery, which was ranked in the top spot in 2008, came in at No. 7 this year. Bryan Simpson, New Belgium's communications director, said the brewery is honored."We are ... an incredibly hard-working bunch and value co-worker input," he said. "Being 100 percent employee owned means everyone has a voice and a hand in making this brewery the best that it can be.” > Click here for Outside Magazine's full ranking, which includes company descriptions, what makes the company a winner, the number of employees and even whether the company is hiring.

"When I decided to sell my home and look for a new place, my first call was to Jim and Ion Real Estate. He listed my condo and in two short weeks my place was under contract. Now, the real fun began, looking for a new place! The Ion Real Estate website was great. I loved the map function and the emails it sent with new listings that matched my previous searches. On Saturday, Jim and I headed out to look at several places I had picked to see. At the time I didn’t really notice how he listened carefully to everything I said about each place from the lighting to the layout. I was even a little sad that I didn’t find anything that day but Jim reassured me not to worry and a week later he had set up some more appointments. I still remember walking into my new place and just knowing. I had only taken two steps into it and I knew I wanted it.
Next came the easy part for me, but this is where having the right realtor and mortgage broker is essential. They make it seem easy! Jim guided me through all the aspects of my sale and purchase. I appreciated how simple each step seemed from making an offer to dealing with inspections. Even the loan seemed easy. I asked a ton of questions, I think it’s the teacher in me. I wanted to understand all the moving parts. Jim explained everything so clearly that I joked that he missed his calling and should have been a teacher, but he didn’t, I’m glad he is helping people find their homes!
Recently one of my close friends mentioned she wanted to stop renting and buy. I immediately referred her to Ion Real Estate. This time I was able to watch with an outsider perspective at the way Jim cued in on my friend’s preferences. Stephanie kept talking about the charm of old houses, a far cry from the sleek modern condo I chose. By the second house-hunting excursion, Jim knew just which home she would pick. As we walked up to the front porch, I saw Stephanie with the same excitement I had felt just a few months earlier. I watched her mentally move in her furniture and this time I saw the smile that crossed over Jim’s face when he knew Stephanie had found her home.
Throughout both experiences, it was clear Jim understands what people want in their homes and how to structure the entire buying experience to be a positive one. I have heard so many crazy stories from people that didn’t chose the right realtor or mortgage broker. They always start by saying, “I didn’t think a realtor made any difference.” It makes a difference! It made a difference for me and for Stephanie. Owning is better than renting; and, it is even better when Jim and Ion Real Estate are guiding you through the process!
