Green Building Materials To Consider When You Are Building Or Remodeling

Green Building Materials To Consider When You Are Building Or Remodeling

I'm a huge fan of the sustainability movement.  From my first Strawbale building classes in Minneapolis circa 1993 to staying at the Taos Earthship biotecture when I visit that area.  I have lived in a yurt for a month one summer and helped friends build a cordwood shed.   I love it all.  The fact that sustainable building and design, including the tiny home movement, is becoming increasingly popular, makes my heart sing!

Did you know Paris France has mandated that all commercial structures built in the city must have a 'green roof' or solar panels!  Bravo!

Did you know that  Worldwide, buildings consume nearly 40% of the world’s energy, 25% of its wood, and 15% of its water?   Buildings in the United States of America are responsible for 39% of our total energy consumption – 60% of electricity alone.

Did you know that from recent statistics it has been predicted that the market for green building materials is going to grow by more than $80 billion in the next five years?  It is all about supply and demand and heartening to know that people are demanding more affordable and accessible green materials for their homes.   Here are some great new products coming in "green design"  I love these...

1.  Tiles made from leather waste products.  Manufacturers of leather products have huge amounts of scrap material.  They make soft, durable tiles, comfortable on bare feet.Leather waste tiles

2. Bottle bricks,  heated, re-shaped and durable, and a new twist on the old bottle in earthen walls, (Earthship style) that has its own beauty.Image titleImage title

There is also bioglass, which takes glass from landfills and turns it into amazing counter tops!

Don't forget the cork in the glass bottle!  Here are some used wine cork tiles for bath wall and floor.  Gorgeous.

Our biggest issue... the plastic bag has been turned into wall material.  Not load bearing, but fire retardant and pretty.

I hope you enjoyed my blog.  Keep your eye out for the next great material for your home, and remember to take care of your home's home... Earth!
